The purpose of tutoring is to guide and assist students, to make them active participants in the educational process and to try to remove, as far as the university institution is concerned, any possible obstacles to a successful academic career. There are different types of activities at the Department of Veterinary Sciences.
Host tutoring
It was designed to help freshmen in the a.y. 2020/21 to settle into the university environment in their first semester, both from the point of view of study organisation and from the social point of view, since the lectures were held at a distance. Two senior students, first-year lecturers and members of the Departmental Tutoring Body contributed to this particular form of tutoring. Depending on the development of the pandemic curve, the host tutoring could be repeated for the year 2021-2022.
Tutoring activities within the framework of the Orientation and Tutoring Project (POT)
Tutoring for Veterinary Medicine students enrolled in 1st year
The Department of Veterinary Sciences is running the POT-SSVET project for first-year Veterinary Medicine students who have identified entry deficiencies (OFAs) or who started first-year activities late due to national ranking slippages. 1st year students can contact senior students via the following email address:
potmv.tutoratoimmatricolati@vet.unipi.it
Using this address it will also be possible to organise remote interviews on the Microsoft Teams platform. In addition to senior students, it will also be possible to interact, when necessary, with the President of the Course of Study and/or the lecturers who make up the Department’s Tutoring, Entry Orientation and Peer Tutoring Body.

Tutoring for off-course (fuori corso) Veterinary Medicine students
The project aims to help students who have been out of the course for several years by trying to understand the causes that led to their delayed studies and then to help them tackle the obstacles by encouraging them to take the exams they need to finish their course. Tutoring is also extended to students who have resumed their studies after long periods of interruption and to those who have applied for the equivalence of their foreign qualification and only have to sit a few examinations within the degree course, in addition to their internship and dissertation. Those interested in this project can contact the student tutors via the following email address:
potmv.tutoratofuoricorso@vet.unipi.it
Using this address it will also be possible to organise remote interviews on the Microsoft Teams platform. In addition to student tutors, it will also be possible to interact, when necessary, with the President of the Course of Study and/or the lecturers who make up the Department’s Tutoring, Entry Orientation and Peer Tutoring Body.
Tutor Teachers
The University’s Tutoring Regulations (R.D. 27/5/2008 and subsequent amendments) provide for the activation of a service for students, with the assignment of a Tutor. After the end of the 1st semester of the 1st year, each student on the Degree Course is assigned a Tutor and the list of these assignments is published; the student will initially be contacted by the Tutor and may then contact the Tutor directly if necessary: the e-mail address and telephone number of the lecturers, as well as their weekly office hours, can be found on the page: Docenti del Corso. Until the academic year 2019-2020 at the end of the 1st semester of the 1st year each student on the Degree Course was assigned a Tutor; the student was initially contacted by the Tutor to whom he/she could/can turn in case of need during the course of study. Recently, the Academic Senate passed a special resolution (71/2020 of 16/04/2020) authorising the Departments to experiment with new organisational methods for tutoring lecturers, also different from those envisaged by the current Regulations, in order to provide elements for its future revision. For this reason, in the academic year 2020/2021, instead of assigning each first-year student a tutor teacher who is then retained for the entire university career, the CoS has assigned not to the individual student but to all the students of the year a limited number of tutors (a sort of group of year tutor teachers), chosen from among those most suited to the role, including the Year Coordinator, already present as a figure in the CoS. In this way, students will change tutor teachers moving from one year of the course to the next, but they will always have tutoring activity aimed at the problems they will encounter in that specific year.
