PhD

PhD

We train researchers in the disciplines of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production.

Why choose the PhD route

The aim of the PhD course in veterinary sciences is to develop research aimed at updating and improving veterinary practice, animal production and animal welfare.

The course aims to ensure the training/qualification of autonomous research specialists. The doctoral candidates will be trained to integrate themselves into existing work plans in public/private entities and will be prepared to independently develop new research projects within the disciplines covered by the doctorate. The doctoral candidate must also develop/demonstrate a good aptitude for teamwork and multidisciplinarity. It is mandatory that they spend a period of study/research abroad to improve their language skills and acquire research techniques to enrich their training. The PhD course in Veterinary Science has joined the PHD plus programme of the University of Pisa, aimed at promoting/encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among PhD and PhD students. PhD students participate in a series of interactive/engaging seminars on entrepreneurial projects led by international experts on innovation and technology transfer

Il Corso

Course description and objectives

The aim of the PhD course in Veterinary Science is to train researchers in the disciplines of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, with a multidisciplinary outlook that is also open to graduates with an adequate background in related disciplines such as chemistry and biology. The aim is to develop research aimed at updating and improving clinical veterinary practice, diagnostic and intervention protocols for animal pathologies and techniques for animal production and nutritional health in the various farmed and wild species; optimising the reproductive performance of livestock and companion animals; and studying the effects of farming systems on animal welfare. Research topics include basic scientific areas of veterinary sciences such as anatomy and physiology and biotechnology of animal reproduction, animal production (zootechnical sciences, nutrition, animal welfare), pathology (areas of parasitology and pathological anatomy), veterinary obstetrics, surgery, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology. The safety, quality and valorisation of food of animal origin are also part of the training objectives. The doctoral students will be trained to integrate themselves into existing work plans at public/private institutions and will be prepared to independently develop new research projects within the disciplines covered by the doctorate. The doctoral candidate must also develop/demonstrate a good aptitude for teamwork and multidisciplinarity. It is strongly recommended that they spend a period of study/research abroad to improve their language skills and acquire research techniques to enrich their training.

Career and professional outlets

The PhD student will be able to conduct research in public and private high-tech facilities in the field of veterinary sciences and animal production both nationally and internationally. With regard to the research carried out in certain specialist areas, the clinical sectors, for example, PhD students will acquire research skills in the spontaneous pathology of domestic/ wild animals, using the resources of the Department of Veterinary Science/Veterinary Teaching Hospital (outpatient clinics, clinical pathology laboratory, intensive care unit, pharmacology and toxicology laboratory, etc.). These acquisitions may be spendable in the fields of veterinary or biological clinical research and also in private facilities.
